How is the Voice? unfolds within the intimate confines of a speech therapist’s office. Beyond
pathology, my goal was to capture what happens within those walls—to immerse listeners in the
work of voice, speech, and memory.
When the voice is wounded, what does it say about us? What does it reveal without asking for
permission? What are we trying to repair when the voice fails? What are we trying to preserve when words remain frozen on the tip of the tongue? What happens in this space where we allow ourselves to stumble?
I sought to give life to the ephemeral—barely outside, already gone. To honor these exchanges
between ourselves and others as they vanish in a breath. The musical moments in the piece serve as a foundation to unfold the full power of voice and speech, uniting these patients in a slightly mad, playful chorus.

Violette Raineri is a radio creator. Her approach involves exploring a self-contained world—such as a speech therapist’s office, a memory, or a goat farm – by probing its boundaries, vocabulary, and rituals. Through this process,
she crafts a fresh and sensitive listening perspective on these places and their characters.
She finished a master’s degree in theater studies from Paris 8 University, trained at Phonurgia Nova Festival, launched several podcasts and also curates the Lancieux Podcast Festival.
