These questions were pondered already in the “feminist sex wars” of the 1970s and 1980s that saw heated debate over whether sadomasochism was a part of the brainwash of the patriarchy or (perverted) radical action to promote equality. The “Extaasi” group, as a representative of the Finnish sadomaso-underground culture, also took part in this debate in its own way.

 

This audio story investigates the fascinating and gruesome esthetics of sadomasochism, along with grotesque roles and archetypes associated with it. It investigates sadomasochism as a private source for sexual pleasure as well as a public performance, and it reflects the ability of sadomasochism to deal with moral issues and change societal power structures.     

 

This essay includes excerpts from a BDSM session between two sex industry professionals, dominatrix Tara Atrox and Camilla Rantanen. The experts interviewed for the essay are sexual therapist and bondage artist Ceci Ferox and Anna-Elena Pääkkölä, a post doctoral researcher for Åbo Akademi.
